As reported a few months back, Detroit techno pioneer Kevin Saunderson visited the Ford Wayne Assembly Plant with field recording equipment and film crew in tow. Now you can watch a short documentary produced from the trip.
Throughout the video, Saunderson compares the rhythmic clanking and contrasting analog and digital machinery to the sounds often found in dance music: “The rhythm, the mechanics, the sound, the power of it all… It kind of reminded me of the early stage in creating music.” He finds many other similar tones and frequencies, emulated by machines the DJ would have probably never encountered otherwise.
Saunderson is also shown in his home studio, seemingly creating music from the sounds he collected on his visit. With any luck, we’ll get to hear some of this material soon, though nothing official has been released by him or Ford.
Watch the full video below and catch Kevin Saunderson this Memorial Day weekend at the Movement Electronic Music Festival in Hart Plaza, where he’ll be spinning with fellow techno legend Derrick May.
