The first words we hear on “KYBM” are “This is unconventional.” They’re an apt description not only for the sound and substance of the second single Tunde Olaniran’s shared from his forthcoming debut full-length, Transgressor, but they sum up the artist himself. Olaniran makes music whose path is completely unpredictable, but whose results are consistently enjoyable. That streak continues on “KYBM,” an acronym meaning “Keep Your Body Moving.” With Olaniran’s vocal acrobatics and a whiplash set of sonic arrangements, there’s no chance you’ll be sitting still for this.
“KYBM” isn’t just a party anthem though, as eccentric as it might be. It’s as much about consciousness-raising as it is hand-raising; Olaniran is committed to many causes in the area — including his work for Planned Parenthood and support for the local LBGTQ scene — and he’s dedicated the song to the social justice community in Detroit. In a time when the body is the site of so much political discourse, “KYBM”‘s hand-clapping percussion, outspoken brass fanfare, and insistent synth lines say as much as Olaniran’s ever-elastic voice. One day this kind of mix will be standard operating procedure, but until then, just keep your body moving.
Transgressor will be released via Quite Scientific Records on August 7. You can listen to “KYBM” below.
