This fall the Detroit Institute of Arts presents 30 Americans, a multimedia tour de force showcasing the work of 30 of the most important African-American artists of the last 30 years. The exhibition, which draws from the Rubell Family Collection, runs the gamut of emotions and themes — from funny and captivating to tragic and thought-provoking — while engaging with issues relevant to our diverse society. 30 Americans arrives at the DIA fresh from the Cincinnati Art Museum and has been on the road intermittently since 2008.

The opening week celebration for 30 Americans will be held on Thursday, October 22 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. In addition to light refreshments, the crowd will be treated to a set by DJ Monty Luke and a performance by Tunde Olaniran. Luke’s sets are bouncy and energetic, pulling heavily from Detroit techno as well as hip-hop and soul. Olaniran’s show is sure to be larger than life, much like the artist himself. Blessed with a four-octave voice, the musician applies his prodigious talents to not just his fantastic singing, but also the staging and choreography of his live productions.

With tickets available for purchase here or at the door for only $15, this will be an evening not to be missed.
