Drone warfare has been all over the news for quite some time now, but you don’t often hear about attacks like this. On Saturday, the Detroit proto-punk group Death and Los Angeles hardcore punk band Trash Talk both played shows at the former Michigan Theatre as part of a Zumiez Best Foot Forward indoor skateboarding event. During the latter act’s set, bassist Spencer Pollard lobbed some beer cans at a quadcopter drone recording the performance.
A direct hit caused the 4.5-pound flying camera to crash 20 ft. to the ground in a secure area in front of the stage, narrowly avoiding the crowd. Harry Arnold, owner of Detroit Drone and the downed device, was hired to film the show by the event producers. Despite $700 in damages to his equipment and a confrontation with Pollard after the attack, Arnold declared to hold no grudge with Trash Talk as he is being reimbursed for his expenses by the promoters.
