Although he originally hails from Detroit, Sufjan Stevens’ musical vision has always ranged far and wide. In 2003, the indie pop singer/songwriter announced a major undertaking — “The 50 States Project” — in which he would write an album for each US state, beginning with Michigan. Stevens has since admitted the series was a “promotional gimmick,” but he did manage to record one more LP for the project.
Illinois, which was widely acclaimed as Stevens’ best album until he released Carrie & Lowell, marked its tenth anniversary earlier this year and is now receiving a special reissue in celebration. The special anniversary edition will be released on vinyl in early 2016 via Steven’s own label, Asthmatic Kitty, and is limited to 10,000 copies. The record will come in two colors: Antimatter Blue and Cape White.
The reissue is being billed as “the Blue Marvel Edition,” as the namesake Marvel Comics character will appear on the new cover. The Blue Marvel was drawn by the original Illinois cover artist Divya Srinivasan. Superman, who originally appeared on the cover, had to be removed from subsequent pressings over copyright infringement issues.
