Detroit-born singer-songwriter Sufjan Steven’s triumphant return to the folk frontier will arrive on March 31 in the form of his new album Carrie & Lowell. Steven has already shared “No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross” from it; now he has given us our second preview of his new work, and yes, there is a lot of guitar finger-picking involved.

“Should Have Known Better” is as much a return to Sufjan’s folk roots as it is a progression in his overall musical style. His lyrics are reminiscent of his most recent projects, seemingly random narratives that are left up to the listener to piece together. The subject matter is still whimsical and imaginative, and Steven’s iconic voice will make you believe anything he says.

The song’s longer running time allows for a beautiful musical breakdown after the first couple verses, whose soft banjo plucking is complemented by an equally gentle keyboard line. From here, the track builds layer upon layer of subtle electronic effects, mixing with a quiet company of soulful voices to provide the perfect backdrop for Steven’s delicate crooning.

Carrie & Lowell will be released on March 31 via Asthmatic Kitty, which is run out of Holland, MI, by Stevens himself along with his stepfather Lowell Brams, for whom the album is named. You can pre-order it here. Listen to “Should Have Known Better” below:
