Slum Village ft. Phife Dawg — "Push It Along"

“Comin’ from the urban city ghettos” is Slum Village’s new single “Push It Along.” The track, off the Detroit crew’s upcoming album Yes, features A Tribe Called Quest’s Phife Dawg and production by Young RJ.

 

Slum Village have been active since 1994 and their old-school hip-hop influences are definitely evident on this track. The song, set over repetitive piano loops and a tittering boom bap drum pattern, is reminiscent of previous Slum Village and Tribe work. A bittersweet commentary on perseverance and overcoming less than ideal conditions, the track features interweaving verses from Phife, T3, and even the late Baatin. According to a statement on the group’s Facebook page, proceeds from the song will go to Baatin’s estate.

 

Yes is slated for release sometime this spring. In the interim, Slum Village will be hitting the road with Pete Rock including a stop at the Crofoot Ballroom on March 13. Check out “Push it Along” below:
