Slick Rick to perform at HopCat Detroit

HopCat Detroit, which made headlines in December for its highly-anticipated commencement on Woodward Ave., has announced one of the most high-profile acts since the opening of internal venue The Huma Room – Slick Rick. (Yes, you read that correctly.)

The 50-year-old, English hip hop legend (born Ricky Martin Lloyd Walters) is widely regarded as “hip hop’s greatest storyteller,” and remains one of the genre’s most-sampled and most-referenced artists. (Artists to incorporate selections of his work include: TLC, Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, Black Star and others.)

Rising as a young MC in the Bronx during hip hop’s “golden era,” Slick Rick made his mark in late 1983 with two infamous tracks: “La Di Da Di” and “Children’s Story.” The two recordings helped to introduce his knack for clearly-articulated narratives and storytelling ingenuity, specifically in regard to using multiple voices between characters within a song.

HopCat Detroit’s The Huma Room will host “Rick The Ruler” on Saturday, May 9 (21+) for $20 ADV, $25 DOS. Get tickets here.
