Sleepless Inn — “Escalators”

This spring brought us music from Sleepless Inn – the duo of Laura Finlay and Eddie Logix – that floated amidst electro-pop images culled from beach vacation postcards of days gone by but transmitted across channels less of the English variety than the televised sort.

To create their evocative sound, Finlay and Logix leaned heavily on the downcast gaze of trip-hop, but they added a sunlit glow borrowed from warmer climates – a welcome respite from Detroit’s harsh winters. The Rainbow Room EP might have been dreamy, but these fantasies were markedly energetic and refreshingly devoid of anything resembling a languid pace.

The lush atmosphere on Sleepless Inn’s new single, “Escalators,” is as surreal as anything they’ve released before. Nonetheless, there’s a new sense of rhythmic movement through stasis, much like standing on an escalator while ascending to a higher floor.

“Time stood still/ as we were weightless,” Finlay sings delicately over Logix’s rustling beats and breathy ambience, as if her memory might slip away should she apply too much force. With “Escalators,” Sleepless Inn sound ready to take their career to the next level.
