After more than 15 years of publishing music, entertainment, news, politics, events, dining, and editorial content, local weekly Real Detroit Weekly will cease to exist as it is merged with competitor weekly The Detroit Metro Times.
The announcement was made via Metro Times‘ blog Monday evening, and posted to both publications’ social media outlets. The announcements via social media have been met with both praise and criticism from followers of both publications.
The merger will, according to the announcement, create the largest alternative print weekly in the state of Michigan, operating under the Metro Times name.
Real Detroit Weekly‘s publisher John Badanjek commented on the merger:
“Real Detroit Weekly has published the best in music and entertainment coverage for over 15 years. We’re excited to join forces with the Metro Times to create a ‘superweekly’ that will offer metro Detroiters more music, art, political, dining and nightlife coverage than previously possible.”
Details regarding the two Detroit publications’ merger have not yet been outlined.
