It’s played host to hometown heroes like The White Stripes, as well as major national acts such as Interpol, Kings of Leon, Mudhoney, Modest Mouse, The Kills, Sleigh Bells, and — well — The National, but starting this spring, one of Detroit’s most beloved and respected rock clubs — The Magic Stick — will see new life as an electronic music venue.

According to a report from The Detroit News, Majestic Complex owner Dave Zainea is partnering with the owner of Pontiac’s Elektricity, Amir Daiza, to transform the Stick (as it is affectionately known) into a space more suitable for DJs and dancing. A $300,000 renovation is in the works, which will include a new sound system, new bathrooms, a bigger stage, updates to the outdoor deck and service bars, as well as general cosmetic improvements. Additionally, the Majestic Theatre will see minor changes. Construction begins in a few weeks and is expected to finish by spring.

During the renovation, live shows will continue in the Majestic Cafe and the Majestic Theatre, which turns 100 years old in 2015. However, the 1000-capacity venue will reduce in size to 400-capacity with a smaller stage. Fans looking for more electronic music at The Magic Stick need not wait long; Scottish producer Rustie plays there this Saturday.
