Between the multi-genre, multi-venue Hamtramck Music Festival, Montreal band TOPS’ raw punk takes on AM pop at the UFO Factory, and the homegrown techno of Carl Craig and Moodymann at TV Lounge, this weekend promises a bevy of aural delights for fans of live music. To that can be added a “secret” warehouse after-party Saturday night, hosted by Jamaican Queens and featuring several billed and unbilled performances by local and national musicians alike.
The event, which is being held in a warehouse space at 6541 East Lafayette in Detroit, begins at midnight tonight and will go until 5:00 a.m. Sunday morning. A $5 entry fee at the door will get you in to a show that includes sets by not only Jamaican Queens themselves, but also Shigeto and Charles Trees, 696 Blues Band (aka James Baljo of Wolf Eyes), Little Animal, and Clyde Moop. In addition, a couple of “extra special,” TOP Secret national acts are scheduled to appear.
The after-party is not being advertised on social media or otherwise, as the organizers are relying on good ol’ word of mouth to spread the news. Still, in the words of Ryan Spencer, the Jamaican Queens’ frontman, “I’m pretty sure it’ll be a blowout. This place has the best sound in Detroit, [and Chris] Koltay is gonna run sound for us.” No matter what, the event sounds sure to be a highlight in a music-packed weekend.
