The best bands make hard work look easy, and nowhere is that more true than with Detroit garage-punk group Growwing Pains. Two years ago, the five-piece released their debut album 17 Songs About the Same Girl on local imprint Urinal Cake Records, a label known for its dedication to independent artists who largely appeal to the underground but have also made waves in the mainstream. Growwing Pains’ audience is about to get even broader, as the band have moved to Volar Records for the follow-up to 17 Songs, an EP entitled I Always Know, which sees release on August 25.
Detroit Music Magazine is honored to premiere an exclusive stream of I Always Know ahead of the EP’s official release. The four-track work finds the group moving forward into new directions; though they sound more at ease with each other and with their own technical abilities, there’s no sign that they’ve become complacent or abandoned their DIY ideals. Instead, Growwing Pains’ intra-band chemistry and instrumental chops lead to a much sought-after musical alchemy — they spin raw punk energy into pure pop gold.
Be sure to check out Growwing Pains tonight for their 7″ release party, hosted by Party Store Productions at UFO Factory. They’ll be supported by Mountains & Rainbows, Ghetto Ghouls, Natural Causes, and Deadbeat Beat. Doors open at 9:00 p.m., and music starts at 9:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here.
