Dopehead, a member of Danny Brown’s Detroit-based Bruiser Brigade, released a free mixtape this week titled Devil’s Heaven.

The project features multiple Bruiser Brigade members, including Danny Brown and in-house producer Skywlkr. The heavyweight mixtape also showcases the lyrical prowess of one of rap’s most overlooked collectives.

Dopehead and Danny Brown collaborated for the first time in 2003 — releasing Runispokets-N-Dumpemindariva under the moniker Rese’vor Dogs. On their latest project, the two flaunt their compatibility once again, this time by mirroring rhyme schemes, mimicking sounds, and matching Skylwkr’s resourcefulness.

Dopehead’s “Jxxky” introduces a minimalist yet high-energy clap anthem. Lyrically, the track features Dopehead’s high-pitched growl and undeniable Bruiser affiliation.

“Hulk on Bath Salts” (featuring Chip$) includes a trap-influenced hi-hat/snare rhythm. The punch of Dopehead’s flow makes for a light on its feet, bouncing, almost horrorcore-like track.

The mixtape’s self-titled track is one of two featuring Danny Brown. The light yet ghoulish melody is reflective of Dopehead’s lyrical intensity. “Devil’s Heaven” proffers a horror-movie soundtrack motif with aggressive flow from both Dopehead and Brown. The constant knock of muted bass and delicate chimes creates a dark, sinister, and powerful force.

Bruiser Brigade’s depth is realized in this lyrically potent and intimidating release. Hardcore elements, selective instrumentation, and jaw-dropping rhymes make for a chilling yet highly skilled narration from Dopehead. Skywlkr, Danny Brown, and Dopehead are in their element throughout the entirety of this robust, Bruiser-approved project.
