In association with SXSW (South by Southwest) music festival in Austin, TX this week, artists signed to Detroit’s Urinal Cake Records will perform as part of Jack White’s Third Man Records SXSW party (March 13-15).
The three-day TMR celebration surrounding SXSW will feature more than 20 live performances, a Third Man Records pop-up shop, a caravan of food trucks, spirits (supplied by George Clooney’s Tequila company) and the infamous Rolling Record Store, which will be stocked with SXSW-specific rarities. Among the 20 live acts, Detroit’s Urinal Cake Records will be represented by Motor City’s own Feelings, Growwing Pains and Protomartyr.
Urinal Cake Records has previously released material from hometown-acts such as: Ritual Howls, Terrible Twos and, Sros Lords, as well as Smelly Tongues, Moon Hairy and Druid Perfume. Detroit-native Ben Blackwell (TMR record executive, Dirtbombs drummer, founder of Cass Records, and official archivist for the White Stripes) expressed his interest for the label during an interview in November.
via Detroit Music Magazine:
“Once I started seeing other places, touring and being exposed to ‘scenes’ or whatever you want to call them, to me it always appeared that, ‘Oh… That kind of stuff isn’t happening everywhere.’ Detroit is unique in that realm. And I still feel that in what I am exposed to. I love the stuff that Urinal Cake Records is doing. Specifically, the Growwing Pains record. Stuff like Growwing Pains and Feelings. Those records I’m really, really into.”
Third Man’s SXSW party will be held at Austin’s Museum of Human Achievement, a multi-purpose art space similar to Detroit’s North End Studios, Russell Industrial Center or Red Bull House of Art. The art space/museum is famously known for its former use as a sex toy manufacturing facility.
