Big Sean has released the visual accompaniment to his upcoming album’s lead single, “IDFWU,” which features an array of hip hop personalities and a less than subtle narrative.
The football-themed storyline follows Sean and his team (the Lions) as they battle their opponents down to the last few seconds of the ‘big game.’ Kanye West, who plays Big Sean’s disappointed-turned-excited coach, paces back and forth wearing a headset, as E-40 announces the game from the high-school press box. Also in attendance: DJ Mo Beatz and “IDFWU” co-producer DJ Mustard.
As the inspiration for “IDFWU” is commonly attributed to Big Sean’s breakup with Naya Rivera, coach Kanye West is heard telling the Detroit rapper to “focus” during the game’s climax. The opposing team’s mascot, a Pirate, has been said to signify Sean’s frustration with those who, he feels, have copied his musical style in recent past.
Detroit’s own Big Sean has his moment of celebration as he is carried off the field, and appears on the front page of his hometown paper, but “IDFWU” makes clear that Big Sean is aspiring to be accepted as one of the greatest, and he believes it’s time for the hip hop community’s acceptance.
