BeatKing brings Danny Brown in for a guest appearance on his latest single “Rambunctious,” but it’s the Houston rapper and not Detroit’s prevailing hip-hop heavyweight who name-checks another Motor City musician.
Comparing his voice to Stevie Wonder is among the many hashtag-ready boasts the MC makes on this cut – which also features RiFF RAFF – from Underground Cassette Tape Music, a collaborative mixtape with Gangsta Boo due out on September 30.
The track is built around a mammoth beat, courtesy of producer SGT J, that threatens to smother the proceedings; however, the three MCs more than rise to the occasion. They’re rambunctious, steamrolling over any small fry who try to get in their way. Classic rap tropes of money and bitches figure prominently in this destined-to-be-anthem, but they’re given a hotheaded energy and sleazy intensity that would make the track at home in both strip clubs and dance clubs.
For his part, Danny Brown continues to deliver at the high level of quality he’s been bringing to his recent spate of guest spots this year. He’s even able to sum up his career in a few lines, and they’re all the more powerful in their simplicity: “I come from a dark past / But guess what, bitch / Got a bright future.” Both self-motivational and self-mythologizing, Brown shines even in a supporting role, and “Rambunctious” is a stunning teaser for BeatKing’s forthcoming mixtape.
