Spoken-word rap sensation Doc Waffles is a Detroit staple. His lyrically complex rhyming and existential subject matter are his well-established calling cards.
Today, the rare book-dealing emcee released a single titled “Silver Remote,” produced by Eddie Logix (MidCoast Most / Progress Report). The CoOwnaz-affiliated track features a tabla-like drum beat and a delicate electric keyboard melody. Logix shows his control at the mixer by creating an appropriately leveled vocal sample (Fiona Apple) throughout the piece — complementing Doc Waffles’ verses, rather than overpowering them.
Doc Waffles showcases his knack for making listeners rewind with this ode to educated wordplay. The double entendre-layered single reminds listeners that hip-hop can be exotic, calm, and refreshing all at once.
“To control the speed of a channel/ A silver remote [silvery moat].”
“Sports talk on the radio/ Feeling all blunted and weird/ Behind the wheel in Huntington Woods/ Where I’m wanted and feared.”
