Fans of Detroit music were treated twice last night, as two icons of the city’s sonic history made appearances on late-night television programs. Not only did The Dead Weather — Jack White’s band with Kills singer Alison Mosshart — perform for the first time live in five years on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, but Motown legend Stevie Wonder was the guest on a pre-taped segment on The Late Late Show with James Gorden.
The soul sensation was featured in a recurring video series entitled Carpool Karaoke, which has showcased Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey, and Jennifer Hudson in the past. Wonder begins the segment in the driver’s seat, joking that he was simply missing his license, but soon enough Corden took the wheel. At this point, Wonder performed a medley of many of his hits, including “Superstition” and a rendition of “I Just Called to Say I Love You” during an impromptu call to Corden’s wife.

Earlier that evening, the newest addition to the late night circuit — Stephen Colbert — played host to The Dead Weather’s first live performance in five years. The band had last played together live on the same stage, but at that time David Letterman was the show’s host. This time around the group blazed through “I Feel Love (Every Million Miles)” off their upcoming record Dodge and Burn. Television viewers may have felt the need to adjust their sets, however, as the performance was overlaid with trippy effects that played against The Dead Weather’s retrodelic aesthetic.
