Fresh off a much-lauded performance last weekend at Governors Ball in New York City, Weird Al Yankovic made a stop at Jack White’s Third Man Records in Nashville to make a very unique kind of recording. The reigning king of song parodies tried his hand, and his vocal cords, out in the Voice-O-Graph booth, a contraption dating back to 1947 that records up to two minutes of audio and that spits it out on a 6″ phonograph disc afterwards, much like a photo booth.
Weird Al is not the first to travel back in this musical time machine; he joins Neil Young — who covered Willie Nelson’s “Crazy” and Ivory Joe Hunter’s “Since I Met You Baby” — and Weezer, who recorded a version of “Susanne.” While online users can soon submit their own versions of the song to the Third Man Records website, for now you can watch video of Weird Al recording his rendition — complete with signature Yoda chant — below.
In other exciting Third Man Records news, the label recently announced a partnership with luxury goods company Shinola, with plans to add operations in Jack White’s hometown of Detroit. Read our story about the expansion for more information.
