A full year after it was first announced, Jeff Mills’ Exhibitionist 2 will finally see release. The CD + DVD package is due out September 2015 — 11 years after the first project of that name — and will be accompanied by a series of three EP releases that serve as “an introduction to the Detroit native’s new effort to go behind the scenes and inside the mind of an electronic musician.” The series kicks off with Exhibitionist 2 Part 1, which drops in late June on Axis Records.
Each track was written by Mills especially for this project and will feature in the Studio Mix on the DVD, which will offer fans “an inside view as to how some of the tracks were created.” According to Mills, the DVD not only shows how he “uses the latest technology, but how he thinks in real time to create and work spontaneously like a musician playing an acoustic instrument or a soloist thinking of rhythms on-the-spot.”
Meanwhile, the Louvre Museum in Paris will host an Exhibitionist 2 night on June 19 as part of the artist’s current residency, where he has been curating a series of concerts that has included such figures as pianist Mikhaïl Rudy, choreographer Michel Abdoul, and science fiction author David Calvo.
Jeff Mills has invited bassist Angie Taylor and keyboardist Gerald Mitchell to perform alongside an edit of the DVD material that has been created especially for this event. The film will “dig deep and explore the mechanics of the brain of the most celebrated electronic musician, and follow him as he creates music on the spot while providing a commentary of the whole process.”
