Powerhouse experimental pop trio Jamaican Queens are back in Detroit after a stint on the road. Their tour hasn’t slowed them down a bit, as they have just shared the third advance track from their upcoming sophomore album Downers.
“Love Is Impossible” starts relatively subdued, featuring a minimalist beat and the quaint strum of a guitar. Shimmering runs give way to crashing drums and fuzzy, pulsating synths, combining to create a wall of sound that aptly emphasizes Ryan Spencer’s hopeful yet melancholy lament, “Life isn’t all that bad, but love is impossible.”
Spencer wrote “Love Is Impossible” after a breakup left him particularly glum. As he told All Things Go, “I was still disenchanted with love and relationships in general, but discovered I could be happy alone.” The track’s feel-good vibe, coupled with its brutally honest lyrics, makes for a break-up anthem that escapes the tired cliché of whiny devastation in favor of authentic acceptance that proves love may be hard, but life is still ok.
Downers is due out June 2 on the group’s own Freakish Pleasures imprint. Listen to the track on the label’s SoundCloud.
