The times, they are-a-changing. As reported early this year, Detroit’s beloved rock venue, The Magic Stick, will soon undergo a major renovation. Starting in mid-April, the venue will become 21+, focus primarily on rising electronic music, and will be henceforth know as “Populux.”
For years, the legendary venue has hosted major acts such as The White Stripes, The National, Jack Johnson, Modest Mouse, and Childish Gambino. While many Detroiters recall fond memories of moshing at the front of the crowd or sharing an intimate moment with a local band, venue owners felt the need to look to the future.
Long a haven for garage rock and hip-hop lovers, Detroit has also had a storied history of producing electronic music, as well as a growing need for venues to support it. Owner Dave Zainea has teamed up with Amir Daiza (previous owner of Clutch Cargo’s and current owner of Pontiac’s Elektricity) to revitalize the dated space. With over 300,000 dollars of renovations including an upgraded sound system, new bathrooms, a bigger stage, and various cosmetic upgrades – concertgoers can look forward to vastly improved facilities.
While the grunge-iness of The Magic Stick was undoubtedly part of its charm, it’s time has come to move on. For those feeling nostalgic, the final show at The Magic Stick will take place on April 9, with Populux planning to unveil the new layout mid-April. Die-hard fans of rock and rap can rest assured that their favorite acts will still be able to perform downstairs in the Majestic Cafe and Majestic Theatre.
