“Cry Cry Cry” off of Jessica Hernandez & The Delta’s debut full-length Secret Evil is a bluesy tune lamenting a relationship that was condemned from the start. Featuring Hernandez’s soulful voice over languid guitar strumming and melodic back-up “oohs,” the song is a little sweet, a little sad, and a lot emotional. Now, the band have released a video that reflects this melancholic dissolution of love perfectly.
The clip, which was shot in Southwest Detroit in front of Hernandez’s family bakery, shows the lead singer emerging from a vintage Lincoln Continental, pushing her grungy boyfriend (played by bassist Steve Lehane), refusing his seemingly heartfelt advances, and driving away, leaving him in her dust. From beginning to end, the video is one continuous slow-motion shot that matches the lethargic, mellow nature of the song. Though the lyrics seem to genuinely apologize for Hernandez’s inability to escape the grasp of past love, the video focuses more on the heat of the moment drama involved in actually breaking up.
