With dirty snow and below freezing temperatures, Detroit doesn’t have the most enticing winter landscape. Brave the cold for these shows and they won’t disappoint.

2/6 Protomartyr, Double Winter @ The MOCAD
MOCAD will host its winter opening with a public preview of their galleries from 7-9pm, followed by performances from the internationally-renowned Protomartyr as well as DIY psych-tinged rockers Double Winter. A great opportunity to see the current rulers of garage-rock (if you still want to call it that) in the city and also who’s in line for the throne. Tickets are $10.
2/14 His Name is Alive 25th Anniversary Tour @ Magic Stick
Born in a basement in Livonia, MI, His Name is Alive only has one constant member over it’s twenty-five year existence as a band. Warren Defever sent tapes relentlessly to record label 4AD (Cocteau Twins, Ariel Pink, The Pixies) and was finally signed in 1990. 25 years after that first album release, HNIA is still signed to 4AD and they want to play for you on Valentine’s Day. Tickets are $15.
2/21 DETROIT x DETROIT V @ Magic Stick
15+ bands perform three or four songs by past or current detroit artists. Performing bands include Greater Alexander, Nina & the Buffalo Riders, and Detroit School of Rock playing songs by KEM, The Bob Seger System and Ted Nugent. Other sets with feature songs by The White Stripes, Stevie Wonder, Rodriguez, Mayer Hawthorne and more. Tickets are $7 ADV, $9 DOS.
2/28 Flint Eastwood, Tunde Olaniran, Gosh Pith, Valley Hush @ Loving Touch
Flint Eastwood will bring their spaghetti-western brand of indie rock to Ferndale at the end of this month, along with three other acts making waves in Detroit’s local scene. It will be an eclectic mix, with Gosh Pith’s “cosmic trap,” Tunde’s grime-influenced R&B and Valley Hush’s woozy trip-hop. Plenty of opportunities to drink beer and be merry. Tickets are $10.
