“Smoke Bellow,” the second single from Detroit “cosmic trap” duo Gosh Pith, gets the video treatment with a clip directed by Tony Katai, who drew inspiration from “the city’s grey 6 a.m. streets that make you question if you are dreaming.” Josh Smith and Josh Freed have been slowly releasing music since this past summer’s single “Waves” and its accompanying video, but this seemingly relaxed pace is evidence they care much more about quality over quantity.
Their new clip follows the Pith crew as they race around a desolate cityscape, hang out with crushed cars in a junkyard, and meditate while being engulfed in (you guessed it) smoke. These scenes are all mixed together with a healthy amount of static and VHS-style fuzz. Smith raps lackadaisically over the song’s steady beat while cruising the empty streets with Freed, and the video’s star, Ellen Rutt, poses amid empty lots and graffiti tags.
Gosh Pith have captured a moving portrait of their city and their scene. Theirs may be a grimy, dystopian version of the D, but it looks like a damn good time.
