The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has announced its 2014 summer lineup, including the return of many of the organization’s most beloved summertime events. Attendees can expect to experience the ‘Most Accessible Orchestra on the Planet’ with the added benefits of outdoor venues, special guests, and classic American themes.

DSO at Stony Creek MetroPark | June 21 | 8:30 pm (Doors open at 6 pm)
Cleveland Orchestra Assistant Conductor Brett Mitchell will lead the DSO in “An American Celebration” featuring the works of classic American composers, and those inspired by American culture. Following the performance, a full fireworks display will be offered to attendees. Concertgoers can expect musical selections from: Bernstein (West Side Story), Copland (An Outdoor Overture), Tchaikovsky (Sleeping Beauty), Dvorak (Carnival Overture), Saint-Saens (Havanaise), J. Straus II (On the Beautiful Blu Danube), and John Williams (The Cowboys). Tickets range from $20 – $50.
Om @ The Max | June 30 | 6 pm
DSO Librarian and Yoga Shelter instructor Ethan Allen will lead in yoga instruction to the sounds of live DSO chamber music. Following the session, participants can enjoy healthy snacks and a fully-stocked juice bar. Tickets are $25.
Salute to America! at Greenfield Village | July 2-5 | 8:30 pm
This 22-year-long partnership with the Henry Ford Museum’s Greenfield Village is reanimated in 2014 for a four-day extravaganza of patriotism and fanfare. Each performance is scheduled to include picnic-style foods, beverages, and of course – fireworks. This must-see Fourth of July celebration will feature The United States Army Field Band, Concert Band, and Soldiers’ Chorus conducted by Robert Bernhardt. Tickets range from $15-$24 (children under 5-years-old are free).
Indigo Girls with the DSO | July 10 | 7:30 pm
Grammy Award-winning duo Indigo Girls will perform alongside the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in a special concert event at Orchestra Hall. The collaboration will feature songs such as “Galileo,” “Love of Our Lives,” and other fan favorites. Tickets range from $30 – $80.
DSO @ Ford House | July 11-12 | 8 pm
This two-night super-show will feature two distinct performances on the property of the historic Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Gross Pointe Shores. Conducted by New York Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Courtney Lewis, Friday’s performance will showcase “A Night Out with the Boys” featuring selections from Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder, and others. Saturday’s performance will feature compositions from around the world with “Symphonic Fireworks.” Attendees can choose to stroll the historic gardens of the Ford House property, explore the small peninsula known as Lake Bird Island (a known hot-spot for migratory birds), and listen to pre-concert music supplied by area music students. Both performances will be followed by a fireworks display. Tickets range from $15 – $50 for both Friday and Saturday.
Free Concert of Colors | July 13 | 3:30 pm
This free event at Orchestra Hall marks the 22nd annual Concert of Colors diversity celebration. Witness the styling of Thornetta Davis and the Thornetta Davis Band, in addition to conductor John McLaughlin Williams, and selections from Duke Ellington and Moncayo’s Huapango.
Meadow Brook 50th Anniversary | July 24 | 7:30 pm
The Detroit Symphony Orchestra will make its return to Meadow Brook Music Festival to commemorate their first performance 50 years ago (in 1964 the venue was built and used as the DSO’s summer home). This performance will feature a surprise special guest (TBA). Tickets will be available May 10 at DSO.org.
