Young Punk, a three-piece experimental rock-trio from Detroit, has released their sophomore EP titled Movin’ On Up and are celebrating their album release Friday (2/28), at New Dodge Lounge, in Hamtramck.

Stephen Stewart and Nick Van Huis, accompanied by seemingly rotating vocalists, make up the ambient-rock group which has become synonymous with flanged guitar riffs, digitally-produced percussion and low-end-driven melodies. The band’s newly-released five-song EP reaffirms Young Punk’s taste for experimental styles, yet provides listeners with a melody-driven project featuring loosely-defined rock rhythms.

The EP’s opening track, “Not Coming Home,” introduces Movin’ On Up with a steady electronic snare and a simple, yet bright guitar riff. Van Huis’ guitar offers a muted line of finger-picking throughout the track, while singer Kim Milke competes alongside a metronomic piano pattern.

“Somebody turn out the light. Cause we’re not coming home tonight.”

The EP’s fourth track, titled “Little Girl,” reflects the band’s tendency for melodic, yet unpredictable sounds. The stomping rhythm crafted from electronic thunder-claps and a tightly-wound hi-hat creates a true live-performance sound. Milke’s vocals add a unifying presence throughout the staccato-focused journey by keeping sounds in-line with her momentum.

“Boy, Boy, boy if you only knew.”

Movin’ On Up is a collection of experimental sounds, subdued melodies and genuine instrumentation. Young Punk easily proves their tenacity and commitment towards progressive styles within this rich tribute to ambient-rock.
