Detroit rap superstar Big Sean has released a new freestyle track along with corresponding visuals titled “1st Quarter Freestyle.”
Produced by Detroit’s own Key Wane (also produced: Drake’s “All Me,” Meek Mill’s “Amen” and Big Sean’s “Guap” and “Beware”) and Travis $cott, the freestyle-track’s haunting beat incorporates a sharply-struck church bell and electronic choir harmonics. The minimalist elements of Wane and $cott’s instrumental provides the perfect platform for Big Sean’s fluid rhyme patterns.
“And I’m way to skinny for jail, hoe. So I gotta stay rich enough just for the bail, hoe.”
The visual component, directed by Mike Carson, is a slow-spinning kaleidoscope of hip hop fashion, plumes of smoke and gold jewelry. Big Sean mirrors his own image while reciting freestyle lyrics comfortably.
Big Sean released his second studio album Hall of Fame in August of 2013, selling more than 100,000 copies in the United States. The album features collaborations with Nas, Common, 2 Chainz, Kid Cudi, Lil Wayne, Juicy J, Meek Mill, Nicki Minaj, Miguel and Young Jeezy, in addition to producers No I.D., Travis $cott and Key Wane. “1st Quarter Freestyle” marks Big Sean’s first release of 2014.
