Detroit horror-punk rockers The Crypt Kickers have released a self-titled, two-song EP follow-up to 2012’s Dance of Death.
The Crypt Kickers specialize in dark punk melodies, rock-n’-roll progressions and fuzzed-out guitar improvisations. The three-piece group consists of Nik (bass, vocals), Mark (guitar, vocals) and Sean (drums).
The EP’s first track, “Dead Rise,” is a power chord-wielding rock anthem with pounding snare and a messy punk rhythm. The non-stop power-riff is met with the deep, droning vocals of true proto-punk, reminiscent of Iggy Pop’s relaxed delivery between screams.
“Portable Power,” the EP’s second (and final) track, exposes hints of early surf-rock and 50s rock-n-roll tempos. The double down-beat of this quick instrumental is undeniably rooted in early rock, but is approached with the intensity congruent with The Crypt Kickers’ dark undertones.
At less than four minutes, The Crypt Kickers is a quick dash of darkness during the season of joy – supplying punk themes, early-rock inspiration and Detroit style.
