Ypsilanti store only location to sell new Aphex Twin record

In yet another bizarre move by Richard D. James, the experimental techno producer who records under the name Aphex Twin, it appears that his latest release is being sold in Ypsilanti — and only in Ypsilanti. The 12″ can be purchased at Technical Equipment Supply, a record store owned by Ghostly’s Todd Osborn. The shop appears to only be open on weekends, so hopefully you can get your copy before it sells out.

The record features two tracks previously released on Aphex Twin’s SoundCloud: “3 GERALD REMIX” and “24 TSIM 2.” James has put out similar, unannounced records in the past year since he started touring again. Those limited-run works sold last year at Day/Night and this year at Field Day were promptly put on eBay for as much as 500 sterling.

Aphex Twin returned from his self-imposed exile in 2014 with his album Syro. Since then he has had a series of sporadic releases, such as Cheetah EP and a re-release of Expert Knob Twiddlers as Mike & Rich, both from 2016. Fans can expect more surprises to come, as earlier this month Aphex Twin started a cryptic countdown on his website that ends July 6. In the meantime, check out Todd Osborne’s Technical Equipment Supply label online or in person in Ypsilanti on the weekends.
